A Tower Built Upon a Dragon’s Cave

Timeline: November 29, 2008 — Evening

Ann-Marie had sent Jesse away to vacation with her friend. Despite the risks, she trusted the girl, and cared for her a great deal. For the last six months the majority of her time was spent with her kind building relationships and establishing her territory. Despite it all, she had always found time to teach and work with Jesse, party with Ironclaw, play music with John and building upon her coven and artwork. Less with Lyla than she would have liked, but Lyla was quite busy lately building her own interests. Kudos for her, Ann-Marie thought; she deserves the success.

With the majority of the establishing work done, Ann-Marie thought it was time for the next step. When she was hungry, she made mistakes and was gone far longer than she wished to. People died. She needed to know her companions better. Johnny was a given, but not for granted. Lyla was remote lately, but she was busy to everyone, not just her. Ironclaw was, well…constant, and as caring as she could expect and no more demanding than she could give. She still relished their time together. So that was good, but again not something she took for granted. The others were more of a mystery.

Rey’s First Hunt

Timeline: November, 2008

The smell of coffee and the sounds of someone moving around in the kitchen downstairs pulled Rey out of a deep sleep. She rolled over and looked at her clock with bleary eyes. “Who the heck is making coffee at three in the morning?” Yawning, she stumbled out of bed, grabbed her robe against the slight chill in the air, and walked down the stairs.

Ironclaw stood there in beige overalls and a hunting cap with two cups of coffee. He held one out for Rey. “‘Bout time, sleepy head. Don’t you know what time it is?”

“Three oh seven a.m.” She stared at the cup. “Why are you here? Why are you wearing…? What? You mean you want to go hunting? Now?”

Seeking Yoda

Timeline: November 29th, 2008

Ramiel knocked on the door to Ariah’s, his expression a somber one.

A bird suddenly exploded into flight and cooing as it went. It had startled Ramiel enough to capture his attention. He watched the startled dove fly away.

The door was open. “Ramiel?”

Ariyah’s voice snared his attention. She was standing in bare feet, wearing cutoff jeans and a shapeless sweatshirt. “Good timing,” she said with a smile. “I was just heading out back to do a little gardening and lay down some hay to protect my annuals from winter frost. I might not have heard your knock in a few minutes. Come on in.”

The Talk

Timeline: November 29, 2008

It was a day after Chaska, Lyla, and Michael got back after hiding the bronze wheel in the ancient pyramid in Shadow. Michael was feeling on edge as of late, due to things that have happened over the past six months that he was away with Ramiel.

So steeling himself, just in case things went bad, Michael went in search of Lyla. Hoping to talk to her privately, about a few things he had on his mind.

It was early evening, and Michael went to the Blood & Brew, to start his search off looking for Lyla.

The Report

Timeline: November 29th, 2008, late evening

Lyla was alone in her office. She put down several pages she was reading and pressed play on a recording. She didn’t like what she heard. Not at all. Her mood from early that day was gone, replaced now by one of somber horror. She listened to the voices on the tape for hours, hearing taped conversations, reports and information she both wanted and dreaded at the same time.

Ever since she had the conversation with Agent Thindle almost six months ago, she hadn’t wanted to believe it. A month later, she’d called him back and asked him how she could help. He’d told her, and she’d accepted it just as she might any other job. She saw a potential for profit and a way to keep her hand in, so to speak.

Late Night

Timeline: Later November 2008

Michael had gone off to bed, and the hour was late. Looking at the clock Ramiel realized that Lyla should have been home over an hour ago. Normally he would not care if she was gone all night but they still had business. He had hoped she was going to jump him in the back room but it turned in to a teacher student fantasy without the kink factor. What good is being disciplined when you don’t get the benefit of being spanked over the extremely sexy teachers lap?

Answer: None

Ramiel had asked Michael to turn some flowers to crystal for him, and it took some persuading, nothing was ever easy with that man, but he did it for him in the end. Ramiel removed the necklace he was wearing and held the small vial in his hand and focused on finding Lyla. He knew exactly where she was, and it bugged him. She had gone to Rey’s and that meant Michael’s little dog house out front was more than accurate.

Mr. Blakely’s Offer

Timeline: Fall, 2008

The evening had been an eventful one. Lyla and Rey had been working the bar that night (which was good — Friday was the best night for tips!). Most of the rest of the pack was off doing various things, but Chaska was there relaxing in a booth. He’d taken to looking out for Lyla’s mental well being these past six months since Ramiel had left with Michael. Clearly his choice to take Michael over her had cut her deeply and he and Rey had learned quite a bit more about both Lyla and Ramiel through all this, though they’d been asked to keep it quiet.

This was the night Ramiel and Michael came home. They ordered drinks and had intended to find a seat when Ramiel realized just how angry Lyla still was about his choice, even though it had happened six months ago. Ramiel and Lyla had a private conversation in her office that lasted about a minute and ended with Lyla obviously cold and angry. Ramiel had spoken with Michael after that, who threw up his hands and told him, “Welcome to my world,” before he left the Blood and Brew.

Life, the Universe, and Everything

Timeline: May 2, 2008

Rey sat on a rough wooden stool, roasting a hot dog on a stick over the fire she’d built next to the cabin. Behind her she’d laid out a blanket, with a picnic basket filled with food. She’d planned to lay outside and look at the stars for a while, and hoped that Grey might join her, if only for a short while.

She pulled the hot dog away from the fire to look at it. “Not quite done.” She put it back over the flames for a while longer. A few moments later she tried to work the hot dog off the stick into the bun but lost hold of both of them and they fell into the fire. “Ah well,” she said with a laugh. “Tonight’s offering to the gods of fire.” She grabbed another hot dog from the picnic basket.

The sound of footsteps caught her attention. Turning toward the sound Rey met not just Grey but Ramiel and Jyn as well.

Cerai’s First Change

Cerai grew up just outside Juneau, Alaska. Her mother died when she was very young, and she was raised by her grandmother (and much of the rest of the town and extended family). Every once in a while, a couple of “mountain men” would come into town to get supplies they couldn’t get from the wilderness. One of them would always stop by and chat with her grandmother, and Cerai would catch him staring at her.

When she was young, it always freaked her out, but as she became a teenager, she realized it wasn’t a dirty old lonely wildman stare, but like he was looking at her, watching for something.

Nighthawks at the Diner

Timeline: June, 2008

“It’s a graveyard charade it’s a late shift masquerade” Nighthawks – Tom Waits

Closing time at the Blood and Brew. Ann-Marie hadn’t been back there often. Out of town exploring, learning or doing missions has occupied her time. Her humanity had been ripped at, tried and tested, yet so far she had done well. While there were several persons who still didn’t trust her, the one she simply didn’t understand was Rey. Ramiel & Michael didn’t trust her as her loyalties were not necessarily to the group; but she was no different than Lyla or Chaska in that way. They had their pack, she had the Morrigan and her service to the Circle that none knew the details of, even Jesse, yet. She was tired of proving herself again and again to them, so she had decided simply to let it go. They’d see what Lyla, Johnny and Chaska saw in her, what Ironclaw saw, in due time. Rey on the other hand. Here was this young innocent, a friend of Jesse’s and all the rest, who simply didn’t care for Ann-Marie. It wasn’t a matter of trust she thought, it was something more primal. A pain.
