Tara’s Price

Timeline: December 26th, 2008

When Michael crawled out of bed, showered and went downstairs, he found the warm, welcoming aroma of a breakfast of eggs benedict, coffee, and milk waiting. Ramiel had found his way there only a few minutes earlier, after having awoken in bed alone today. Lyla had left a note that she was going to chase down some breakfast because she had a busy early morning and that she’d see him around noon today. Therefore, he was curious who might be cooking.

To the surprise of both mages, it was none other than Tara Honeywell. She had already finished and was sitting back with primly crossed legs nursing a cup of hot tea. Aside from the two plates she’d laid out for Ramiel and Michael, there was a stack of toast to share between them, and whatever jams and jellies she could find in the refrigerator.

“Morning boys,” she said to the both of them. “Eat up. I think you’re going to need your energy today,” she said with a clever smile.

The Lupa

Timeline: December 26th, 2008

“I said no,” Lyla said. The Young Father Bear pack Lupa stared hard at the tall blond standing in the frigid snow-dusted sidewalk. It was night but brightly lit by street lights. With the light snow, which still gently fell even as the two women confronted each other, there were few shadows anywhere in town, especially here near the parking lot of the Blood and Brew tavern. It was 2:30 am and that meant the customers were long gone. Rey had herself only just stepped outside to lock up the front door before going home when she heard Lyla’s firm statement.

It was cold, but not bitterly so. Even twenty degrees Fahrenheit didn’t seem so bad when the air was as still as it was tonight. Lyla stood dressed in a lined, black leather jacket that was more fashionable than warm, gloves and a nice knit hat. The woman confronting her was Gillian, a member of the werewolf pack in Eldon Well. Lyla was, ever since she’d defeated Rose a year and a half ago, the top female in the pack. That meant that if she chose to set rules down, then the other females were expected to follow them. However, it was also up to her to enforce those rules. It appeared that Gillian had a difference of opinion with Lyla over something tonight.

Welcome to the Family, Rey

Timeline: December 11, 2008

Lyla picked up Rey in the morning and they drove down to Manchester dressed for business. Her boss had given Rey a packet of cash worth about ten grand. That, she was told, was the expense account for this run and which belonged to Lyla personally. But Rey would be managing it from here on out. Each trip they made, Lyla would refresh it back up to ten grand.

Lyla rented a black Dodge Charger sedan. She asked Rey to drive the rest of the way to Boston, reasoning that she might as well get used to the drive since she’d likely have to do this on her own at times. She also stowed Rey’s brief case in the trunk while she stuck her own brief case behind her legs in the passenger side front seat.

Secrets Revealed

Timeline: December 19th, 2008

Ramiel had gone with Lyla to Boston to join Ann-Marie and Jesse for an evening out, and they were joined by Michael as well. Lyla had a meeting she said she couldn’t miss at 11 but said that she would very much like it if Ramiel would join her. The evening, it was planned, was really for Jesse and Ann-Marie in the sense that Lyla had promised to tack them to one lesbian bar at least. She intended, however, to also take Ramiel someplace the boys would be more welcome and have some fun for themselves, too.

When they arrived in Boston, she took Ramiel to her condominium. She couldn’t help but notice that through his silence, he looked annoyed, even angry as he looked around the little-used but finely furnished condo. That surprised her. She’d hoped he’d be impressed that her little “project”, actually a major business for her now, had been so profitable. Clearly, not bringing him in sooner was a mistake.

Lyla’s Project Part 3

Timeline: December 9th, 2008

It was just after 4:30 when Rey found herself standing outside the door to the Blood & Brew. It was unlikely to be busy, as the suppertime “rush” didn’t start until around 5:30.

She’d returned later than she’d expected, having taken Lyla’s advice and had some “fun”. Rey treated herself to a haircut, manicure and pedicure on her boss’ dollar. Looking down at herself for one last check, she opened the door and walked in.

Lyla looked up from where she was wiping down the bar to see the young woman walk in. She was impeccably dressed in a dark gray pinstriped skirt suit and dark green blouse. Her brand new, low heeled shoes snapped as she walked smartly towards the bar, her head held high. If it hadn’t been for the familiar strawberry blonde hair in its sleek bob style, Lyla probably wouldn’t have recognized Rey at a distance. Her makeup was applied differently, making her look pretty, but not beautiful. Even her body language was different. She’d have easily blended into any corporate office.

Lyla’s Project Part 2

Timeline: December 9th, 2008

It was a couple minutes before ten when Rey arrived at the house. She was tired, having greeted the dawn screaming Grey’s name a third time before he finally succumbed to his own release. The young witch wasn’t so tired that she had circles under her eyes, but she would definitely need a nap when she got back from Manchester.

She’d brought everything she’d need to go shopping with her, so she could head out directly after meeting with Lyla. Rey’d have to buy more than just a couple of suits; she needed to get underwear, shoes, the works. That meant extra stops to make on her list.

Stifling a yawn, she opened the door and walked into the house.

Lyla’s Project

Timeline: December 9th, 2008, 2:30 am

The bar was closed. There were the usual weeknight barflies that hung out through the 1:30 am last call until the 2am closing. Lyla and Rey were the only ones left in the building and they worked through the usual routine of cleaning the bar, stacking the chairs, sweeping and mopping the floor, and all the other mundane tasks of running a business.

They had the routine down by now, of course and by 2:30 am they were finished. Rey went to retrieve her coat when she felt Lyla’s warm hand on her shoulder.

“Rey. Hold on a while.” Lyla looked like she had something on her mind. “I know it’s late and you’re tired, but there’s something I want to talk to you about. Something I need you to be discrete with and not discuss with anyone else. Not Ironclaw, not Grey. No one.

Family Matters

Timeline: December, 2008

Ann-Marie was home in the living room. She had just gotten up and set up her music. Jesse, her ever helpful aid, was not home yet. On these nights, once per week at least, Johnny and her would play. It was a tradition that hearkened back to their early family days. Tuning her instrument, she waited for Johnny to come home from his shift.

She heard him coming up the walk. John opened the door, silently with every thing that had happened he had almost forgotten that it was family night. “Be right back Grace, I just need to grab my old girl by the neck and I will be there with bells on.”

She smiled as he left to get his instrument. She liked being called Grace, but only by him. No one else had that right, nor would they ever know. Speaking up as he went down the hallway she asked, “Johnny, you looked distracted. Is something troubling you?”

Another Point of View

Timeline: November 30, 2008 — 2:30 am

Jesse had been transitioning to become a bit of a night owl. It worked better in that she could help Ann-Marie and keep her updated with business of the day more easily. So, she’d taken to staying up until around 3:30 am, then up by ten am or so to do some part time work for Tara (depending on the day). This left late afternoon and early evening to handle business for Ann-Marie. Given her artist profession, those duties were pretty light and consisted mostly of making arrangements at businesses and galleries to show her boss’s art. Most sales seemed to be generated from places like that rather than direct requests, although ebay self-publish of Ann-Marie’s work was doing reasonably well.

Ann found Jesse, having finished her various tasks many hours ago, watching some movies on dvd at home.

“Evening Jesse,” she paused, “you are up late. All packed for the trip?” she asked. It was obvious to Jesse that Ann-Marie had had a long night so far.

Youth Shelter, the Search for Serena

Timeline: November 30, 2008 — 2 am

Ramiel collapsed on the couch and stared at the address and name he had scribbled down next the the phone number on the bar napkin. He pulled four more number out of his other pockets and tossed them aside.

I need to find out more about this place and this girl, could she really be Serena?

After thinking about it for a little bit he knew that he needed Tara’s help. She is a private investigator after all, but what about Lyla? Ok tonight I find Lyla and tomorrow Tara, then wrap this up before I meet with Shining Temple of the Ancients.

Ramiel looked at his watch and called the Blood and Brew, it was around closing time maybe she was there.
