Looking for Answers

TimeLine: January 31, 2009

Ramiel stood in the doorway of Sirena’s room watching her sleep, a myriad of thoughts running through his mind.

Earlier that evening he had been called to a meeting, What they said made sense, he had known it was coming. He had known for some time that the darkness was growing inside. The problem was that he did not agree with what they had conspired to do. Damn Uratha and their emotions. Shit!

He watched Serena for a few moments and then settled on a thought. That might work, or it could make things worse. He moved down the hall to his room and looked in on Lyla. It was the longest he had seen her sleep in a long time. No doubt she would be awake soon, he had an hour or two at best. For certain, she looked like she needed it. She looked stretched thin and pale as she lay there naked on top of the covers.

Even Lupas Get the Blues

Timeline: February, 2009

Rey sat at the table in her cabin, a slowly cooling bowl of stew in front of her. She hadn’t eaten any of it. Her stomach was churning, and her thoughts miles away.

“Tell me what is bothering you.” Gray said as he replaced the cold bowl of stew with a fresh warm one.

“I’m a human who’s the alpha female of a pack. I betrayed the trust of my best friends. I have until June to try and figure out a way to stay Lupa and avoid getting beaten to a bloody mass when Lyla challenges me, or stand by and watch as she does something horrible to Ironclaw. And I have to run a criminal organization for three months, trying to find some way to get control of it without Lyla fitting me with concrete shoes or hiring someone to put a bullet in my head.” Ignoring the stew, she rested her forehead in her hands.

To Learn the Dance of Shadow and Spirit

Timeline: January 29, 2009

Ann-Marie and Anu/Jesse had spent quite some time together learning the mysteries of the spirit world. The more she learned, the more confident that this was the path for her. While relaxing after a lesson, Ann-Marie turned to her friend and teacher, a question on her mind, “Jesse, I must ask. While we were gone, what happened with the werewolves? You are here, so obviously it went somewhat well, yes?”

“We set an ambush, killed some deadites and then followed the spirits back to where they were nesting. They may be faster than your human friends,” said Jesse, “but they are not faster than certain werewolves. When we cornered them, they fled to Shadow. We hunted them down and destroyed them.

Jesse smiled a smile that was not Jesse at all. In fact, it was a bit scary. “They were delicious.”

Concerns for the Future

Timeline: January 31st, 2009

Grey had asked Rey to meet him for a private meet at the motel down near the highway. Ironclaw also asked Ramiel and Chaska to meet with himself and Grey. Neither Grey nor Ironclaw, who’d arranged for a the largest room to be reserved, would say anything about what the meeting was about until everyone was there. And all members were asked to say nothing to anyone else about the meeting, that it was important to this be secret.

It was another cold evening in January and Rey had to leave the bar in the car of Selene and Lyla (which had a hell of a mess to clean up before they opened that evening). Snow was gently falling from a darkened sky, and the wind made the trek seem a lot longer than it should have. Yet, when they arrived, they found both Grey and Ironclaw seated in a very warm room sipping mugs of steaming beef broth as others came in. They offered each a cup if they liked.

The Girlfriend

Timeline: February, 2009

It was evening when Gillian arrived at Michael’s shop. Soon he’d be closed, but it had taken her all day to work up the nerve. She still didn’t know what she’d say.

Honestly, she just wanted to be strong and powerful like Lyla. Even though the ex-lupa had been cast down, it had taken two-thirds of the pack to do it. Gillian had long felt that it was because she had Ramiel, a powerful mage, that Lyla was so strong of mind and body. She wanted that, too. But she didn’t know much about dating.

So, she found something red and just a bit showy and decided she needed to go shopping for a weapon. She had to introduce herself and then entice him, after all. With a thick leather coat draped over her shoulders she stopped delaying and stepped into his store.

Bad Night’s Tale

Timeline: January 30, 2009

Lyla slipped back home at last. It had been a long, late, painful night with more twists and turns than a Cretin Labyrinth. Her body was exhausted and she was emotionally drained. She was still angry about what Ironclaw had done and wanted a sympathetic ear to bend before she collapsed into sleep.

She slipped upstairs and past Serena’s room, then tip-toed into Ramiel’s room

Steam spilled out of the open bathroom and Ramiel emerged from it’s depths, the only cloth was the one in his hands dryng his hair. “You look like shit love.”

Chaska’s Healing

Timeline: January 30, 2009

This wasn’t supposed to happen. This was an anathema to what Chaska thought of as ‘family’. But it was over even though the ramifications of what happened were far from over. He knew this was going to tear at Lyla just as much as it was him if not more. How was she going to react to it all? How was she going to react to Iron Claw sending practically the entire pack against her? Would it even phase her? How was Rey going to react to Lyla now that she was the alpha female? Those answers would likely have to come in time.

Lyla stirred in his arms. Chaska was taking her to one of his quiet spots in the woods. He needed to feel serene himself if he was going to heal Lyla and his heart quieted by nature was the best way to concentrate.

A Conversation in the Shadows

Timeline: January 30, 2009

Ironclaw met Grey at the old, hollow tree locus. His old friend was exhausted from the healing he’d done for Gillian. She’d gone home to rest some more, but Grey had stayed at the locus and tried to recoup some of the massive energy he lost in the healing. Fights within the pack were always expensive both emotionally and in terms of resources. He leaned tiredly against the rough wood of the interior of the tree and warmed himself by the fire he’d made. Ironclaw took off his snow-covered work boots and sat down cross-legged.

The big man shook his head morosely. “I hated that.”

Grey opened one eye at him. “You did what you had to do.”

Change in Management

Timeline: January 30, 2009

Rey left the Blood and Brew and went directly to Ramiel’s place to wait for Lyla. She knew that’s where Lyla would most likely head when she was strong enough to walk. She stood waiting for Lyla on the porch.

Rey had to wait a long time, long enough for the motion-sensing porch light to wink out. It was damned cold out and it felt like frost would seep into her bones. Just when her mind had wandered to how she was going to handle this for about the millionth time, the porch light suddenly winked on. There in the snow, wrapped in Chaska’s furs, was Lyla.

After her conversation with Chaska, and having properly thanked him for helping her after the fight, Lyla had limped home alone, telling Chaska she wanted time to think. Besides, she was now at the bottom of the pack, she’d told him, and it was now everyone else’s responsibility to watch out for her and protect her, even if she might not have the same rights and responsibilities she used to have.

Uratha Priorities

Timeline: January 28, 2009

Ironclaw stood with his hands on his hips and a snarl on his face. “Now tell me again. You did what?”

Lyla frowned and hesitated. After she’d told Ironclaw that she and Chaska needed to go to Mythic City to fulfill an obligation for a deal they’d made, Ironclaw cut her off and called for a meeting of the entire pack. Now they were here at the Blood and Brew. Ironclaw stood at the the center of the pack, which was arrayed to his left and to his right. Rose and Selene had cleared tables and chairs in the widest part of the bar to make room for this meeting, and Lyla had a sinking feeling about this.

To his left stood Rose, Selene, Gillian and Rey. To his right was Grey. Both Lyla and Chaska stood before the pack. It felt like a trial and maybe in some way that’s what it was.
