The Prisoners

Timeline: Evening, April 7th 2008

Ironclaw had ordered the removal — with thanks for their help — of the alien shapeshifters in his territory. This had included Julia, Dark Sun, and Wang Chi. Then of course there was the matter of the three wererat prisoners. Since two of them were townsfolk, this could be a problem.

They were the first thing on Lyla’s mind when Ironclaw made his intentions clear; he would tolerate no other shapeshifters in his territory. She knew it was be the first thing John Beckett would think of too, when he heard. They needed a solution soon, before they became just another casualty listed during the brief but intense war with the Witch Rats.

Between Battles

Timeline: 4 am, April 6th 2008 — New Moon.

Rey sighed in relief when she neared the Cave locus. She was exhausted, and her shoulder and back ached. If John saw her now, he’d probably be lecturing her about taking things easy, but she couldn’t. Not until the wererats were defeated and driven out.

She didn’t bother trying to be stealthy. Anyone in the cave would be downwind and they’d be able to smell her coming; her scent, the blood from her shoulder if the bite had started bleeding again, and probably the meat she carried in her backpack. She grabbed as much of it as she could carry from the bar when she closed it down. If anyone had been injured, the food she’d put there probably wouldn’t have been enough.

Resolution of Chaos

Timeline: Shortly after midnight, April 5th, 2008

The lightning-quick strikes all over Eldon Well had thrown the populace into chaos and there seemed to be injuries everywhere. Children cried out for missing parents; parents searched desperately for separated children. Fire brigades had run hoses from fire wagons and worked to control the spread of small fires that lit the town from numerous locations. The police department had deputized a number of level-headed individuals to help return order to the town. The hospital was inundated with the injured and the school auditorium and gymnasium crowded with frightened town folk.

Siblings 3

Timeline: Late March, 2008

Ann-Marie waited patiently on a bench for John outside of the hospital after one of his long shifts. She had called earlier and wanted to talk to him. She missed her brother for so long and for so many years, that spending time with him had become a joy. Talking, taking a walk, or playing music. With clubbing with Lyla, her relationship with Ironclaw, duties in Albany, her artwork and now Jesse; that time had become more precious. But what she had to ask him tonight was very important.

John saw the lone figure on the bench outside the hospital, as he came out stretching and yawning. He sat down beside her and said, “Hey there Ann-Marie, whats shakin’? You sounded pretty serious on the phone earlier.”

“Just was putting some thoughts together and well, after what that ex of Ramiel’s said about something terrible coming and rats and all that I wanted to ask you about a few things. That’s all.”

Lunch With the New Girl

Timeline: March 26th, 2008

Jesse arrived at the Blood and Brew right on time — and hungry for lunch. She stepped inside the bar and blinked as her eyes adjusted to the lighting, then looked around to see if Ramiel was really going to be here or not.

Ramiel was there wearing well fitted and worn jeans; the kind that had been well broken in to show off his body perfectly. Not something done intentionally, but like any good jeans happened over time. He wore a simple black tshirt, well fitted and plain. His hair was pulled back in a low ponytail. It gathered just below the base of his neckline. It left his face framed gracefully with his hair.

Today even his drink was plain, iced tea. He had several appetizers on the bar, and smiled to see Jesse made it. “I didn’t know what you liked, so buffet it is.” He gestured for her to sit next to him.

Later With Jesse and Ann-Marie

Timeline: March 25th, 2008

Jesse and Ann-Marie left the Blood and Brew and headed to Ann-Marie’s home. Jesse was quiet on the way out and remained so until they arrived at the house.

“Why so quiet Jesse?” Ann-Marie asked.
She looked at Ann-Marie. “Hm? Oh! Sorry I was just thinking I need to do some research at the library.”

Ann-Marie thought there was more, “Would you rather have stayed in the bar tonight? You seemed to enjoy yourself.”
“They’re interesting people,” Jesse said. “Most of the locals aren’t really all that talkative, at least not me since I’m a stranger.”

Later With Ramiel and Rey

Timeline: March 25th, 2008

After Anne-Marie and Jesse had left Ramiel waited for a couple minutes then looked at Rey. “So what is she doing with Annie? Why is she being told what to do by her? This seems to be more than just a job. Do you know anything Rey?” Ramiel asked as he finished his drink.

Now that the bar was empty save for the two of them, Rey didn’t bother hiding the concern she was feeling. “Oh god, I hope I’m wrong, but I’m afraid she’s going to try and turn Jesse into a ghoul.” She picked up her glass but her hands were shaking so bad she had to set it down again. “Jesse’s got all the things they like in ghouls. She’s on her own, far from family and friends. She’s vulnerable, hurting inside. Nobody would miss her until it was too late.” Her voice dropped to a whisper. “Just like Frank.”

A Small Gift

Timeline: April 3rd, 2008

Julia was at Ramiel’s place just outside of town, and Rey had no trouble finding her way there. Tension was thick in the air, however; the townsfolk had a feeling something was up, but no one knew what it was exactly. The Pack was conspicuously absent, though Rey knew they were all out on patrol, on high alert for the supposed coming threat.

She had a some duffels containing emergency rations, meds, clothing and other supplies that needed to be distributed at various pack fall-back points, and the first and biggest of these was of course the Cave Locus near Ramiel’s resort. And that meant she’d also find Julia there because she knew that the woman had been staying there under Ramiel’s and Lyla’s watchful eyes.

Rey stashed all but one of the duffel bags in her old room, and went in search of Julia.
